Under the tutelage of David Wilkes, due to Eric Kinder being otherwise engaged with the first team, Carlisle's youth side made the journey down the M6 to take on a Saddlers outfit that had knocked them out of the FA Youth Cup last season, It looked like being another dark day for the Blues as well as they found themselves 2-0 down after just ten minutes thanks to an on-target header and shot from the home team.

The United lads didn't let their heads drop though as they fought back to level matters before half-time. Gary Madine first netting from the penalty spot after Stephen Hindmarch had been fouled, Hindmarch then turning scorer for the second Carlisle goal with a shot from out wide that sneaked across the face of the Saddlers six-yard box before nestling in the far bottom corner of the net.

In an end-to-end second-half both sides searched for the winner but it was the Blues that finished a remarkable comeback when they claimed that winning goal with less than ten minutes left. Michael Dowson, Hindmarch and Madine all involved as Jonny Blake lashed home a loose ball from 12 yards out to give United all three points. Grant Carson played his part between the United sticks as well though with an all-important penalty save to preserve the victory.
