Walsall Youth 2-1 United Youth

Walsall made it three wins out of three at the start of their Puma Youth Alliance North West Conference Group B campaign this morning as they condemned United to a late defeat. Neither side could breach the stout defence of the other in a quiet first-half, Carlisle's best chance coming when Dan Rayson's far-post shot, after a neat cross in by Stewardson from the Saddlers by-line, was well saved by Walsall keeper James McKeown.

The home side came roaring out after the interval and a sustained spell of pressure saw them take the lead after seven minutes of the second-half, Charlton Davies firing home a neat four-man move. To their credit though the young Blues stuck to their task and equalised through Stewardson, the young winger seeing his first shot blocked, after a pacey run into the opposition box, only for the ball to ricochet straight back to him. Whitehaven-born Stewardson than firing the ball into the back of the Walsall net to bring matters level in the match.

Just as the game was likely all-on to end in a draw, after some hard work in the defensive ranks by both sides, the Saddlers somehow managed to grab a late injury time winner. The home side's Rory Curtis cracking a shot in from the edge of the United box which Blues glovesman Grant Carson made an uncharacteristic mistake on as the ball dribbled past him and into the back of the United net. The final whistle came literally seconds later to signal a disappointing result for Carlisle and a long trip home to Cumbria.
