With second year players Jamie Cleary and Liam Davison both sat on the sidelines through injury United boss Eric Kinder was forced to field only four experienced players in the opening period and just two in the second half. Their first outing of the campaign coming after a training camp at Stirling University against a St Mirren u-19 side.

The young Blues did take the lead in the match though as early as the fourth minute when a St Mirren defender gave the ball away and Ryan Bowman was on hand to fire a shot home. The Saints came back strongly though and were 3-1 up before Carlisle could score again to make it a tight finish, Matt Osmond heading in at the back-post after Mark Sloan had put in an excellent cross.
