So the last thing the lads needed today was to take on a high-flying Rochdale side in a match played on a bumpy pitch at Dark Lane, Rossendale United FC. The Carlisle cause helped even less by the withdrawal through illness of striker Mark Beck just before kick-off, while in the home line-up was Preston winger Oliver Devenney who is currently on trial at Spotland.

The Blues going as close to getting a goal as they would do throughout the game when Manny Richardson hit the post early on with a shot from the edge of the box. Carlisle's injury problems then getting even worse in the 16th minute when Mark Sloan was forced off injured, that meaning that his replacement Phil Towler had to play upfront and out of position for the rest of the match.

Rochdale then took the lead in the game five minutes later when their skipper Josh Brizzel set up Devenney for a close range shot beyond the reach of Blues goalkeeper Mark Gillespie. Into the second-half and on 48 minutes Towler missed a good chance to equalise for United when one-on-one with Rochdale stopper Jordan Andrews, he could only fire well wide of the target.

Shortly afterwards and Brizzel was yellow carded for a poor challenge on Blues left-back Matt Osmond, the game then going through a quiet spell before United's Ben McKenna had a useful shot deflected wide after 65 minutes. The Cumbrians then suffering another injury at the midway point in the half as Jamie Cleary took a whack in the face and had to be substituted for James Bonner.

Pacey Rochdale frontman Helios Andre then struck in a powerful effort on 72 minutes which clipped the United crossbar on the way over the top before the home side did make it 2-0 sixty seconds later. Brizzel involved in a one-two with Reece Gray which allowed him to run in clear on goal before shooting into the Carlisle net.

The 'Dale put another good move together in the 76th minute when Andre and Devenney combined, Devenney's half-volley forcing a good save from Gillespie. A Brizzel shot two minutes later then bringing an even better stop out of the overworked Blues goalkeeper. The last chance of the match again coming the way of Rochdale when Tom Buckley set up Russell Benjamin for a shot wide of the target nine minutes from time.
