Today's defeat down in Lancashire makes it very hard now for Carlisle to win the league, as it leaves Burnley now just five points behind in third with a massive four games in hand, that not even accounting for table-toppers Wrexham who are three points ahead of United having played one match more.

Kicking off at the QED Stadium, Bamber Bridge, the young Blues were forced into playing Conor Tinnion upfront, with James Reid unavailable and Andy Cook out on loan at Workington, Matt Duffy therefore moving up onto the left-hand side of midfield. Tinnion involved in the Carlisle goal after 23 minutes when his inswinging corner was headed home by Jonny Blake.

In-form North End came straight back though and equalised just five minutes later when Ryan McGreevy netted from close range. Ryan Bowman then failing to retake the lead for the young Blues when, after rounding Jack Cudworth in the Preston goal, he was just unable to shoot into the net from a tight angle.

The second-half saw few clearcut chances created, with Alex Mitchell comfortably saving a McGreevy shot on 65 minutes. The dagger to the United heart though came very late on as North End scored two goals in the final stages to claim all three points and virtually extinguish Carlisle's title hopes.

The first goal coming in the 89th minute when United gave the ball away at an attacking set-piece and then allowed Jamie Proctor to run from his own half almost unchallenged deep into Carlisle territory. Proctor then laying the ball back for George Miller who was able to smack it high beyond Mitchell from 18 yards out.

Sam Hart then capitalising on some more disappointing United defending in stoppage time to make the final score 3-1. So, it's a tough ask for Carlisle now to get anything out of this season with another away game to come at Macclesfield on Saturday, as for North End, if they had started the season the way that they are finishing it then they would be way clear at the top of the table, sadly for United their tale of woe is the other way round.
