Newcastle Youth 3-2 United Youth

The match was played at the purpose-built headquarters of the Newcastle United academy at Little Benton, located to the immediate south of Darsley Park, where the Magpies youngsters have been based since the start of the 2003-04 campaign. It was originally scheduled for a 2pm kick-off but, in what was the hottest July day in 95 years, the game was sensibly put back to a 6.30pm start.

Carlisle couldn't have started any brighter and took the lead as early as the third minute when a deep free-kick up by Ashley Combe into the Newcastle box was headed home well by the unmarked Matthew Wood. It didn't take the home side long to recover though and they soon levelled through their B Trialist from a James Marwood pass just nine minutes later, that coming shortly after Adam Bradley had made a good save to keep a header out from the A Trialist on eight minutes.

That was as good as it got for the B Trialist however as he limped off shortly afterwards, feeling the effects of a heavy tackle. His namesake A Trialist got on the scoresheet with the last kick of the half though to put the North-East giants 2-1 up at the break, knocking home a close range loose ball after Bradley had untypically fumbled a Newcastle shot on goal. The Toon came out well after the break and made the scoreline 3-1 just two minutes in when Lewis Marr scored with a low drive from the edge of the Carlisle box after some hesitant United defending.

The Blues weren't daunted though and Marr went from hero to villain just five minutes later as his mistake allowed the Cumbrians to sneak in and pull the game back to within one goal again through Andy Hardman, after a nice set-up by Stephen Hindmarch. Carlisle never really looked like clawing back to level terms from then on though as Newcastle dominated to the final whistle, the Toon coming closest to a 4-2 win just after the hour when a shot cannonned back off the Blues crossbar.
