After losing 3-1 at Preston on Wednesday to two late goals in a must win game, today pretty much signalled the end of United's efforts to take the youth team title this season. Carlisle started the game well though and should have taken the lead early on when they had a goal wrongly chalked off by a poor officiating decision.

Ryan Bowman, in an offside position, from Alex Mitchell's long goal-kick up collecting the ball before firing past the Macclesfield goalkeeper. The referee has already stopped play though as his assistant had incorrectly put his flag up to signal Bowman as offside, the rule being that you can't be offside from a goal-kick.

Little happened in the first-half after that with the sides going into the interval goalless. Macclesfield though going 1-0 up after 50 minutes when they worked a long throw-in for striker James Moss to fire home beyond Mitchell. United came straight back into it however when they equalised just three minutes later.

James Reid being brought down in the area to win the young Blues a penalty, Matt Duffy though seeing his spot-kick saved only for the referee to signal that it should be taken again as the Town goalkeeper had come off his line. Duffy the second time making no mistake from 12 yards out to level matters in the match.

It was certainly a busy spell in the game now and the Silkmen retook the lead midway through the second-half. Duffy making a defensive error that allowed Vinny Mukendi to grab the winner for the home side, United unable to create anything in the later stages of the match to try to nick a point.

So, title hopes ended, and just four games left in the season for the lads, five of the eight second years still have plenty to play for though as they look to join Tom Aldred, Jonny Blake and Andy Cook in getting professional contracts. Their next chance to impress coming this Saturday morning when they face Port Vale in an 11.30am kick-off at Creighton Rugby Club.
