It's Manchester United For The Young Blues

The big prize
Manchester United did it the hard way at Northwich's Victoria Stadium as they scored two goals in the last fifteen minutes to overcome a dogged and determined Seagulls outfit. The visitors took a surprise lead on 25 minutes when Brighton defender Lee Bryant netted from close range after Steve Cook had flicked on a Reuben French corner at the near-post.

Midfielder Danny Drinkwater was the unluckiest man for the home side just after the interval when he hit the post twice in a ten minute spell as the Albion started to creak at the back under incessant pressure. In the 75th minute a shock victory for the Seagulls still looked on the cards only for Antonio Bryan to fire home an equaliser for the Red Devils.

The home side really had the bit between their teeth now and they grabbed what would turn out to be a late winner just five minutes later. Italian striker Federico Macheda being brought down in the box by Brighton goalkeeper Josh Pelling, Macheda stepping up to take the penalty and, after seeing his initial spot-kick saved, scoring at the second attempt.

Manchester United, under coach Paul McGuinness, perhaps aren't as good as you'd expect them to be in the world of youth team football as they currently sit third, behind rivals City and Everton, in a ten-team table in their regional section of the FA Premier Academy League. The Red Devils having won nine, drawn one and lost five of their sixteen league games played to date.

Their result tonight, in struggling to get past a Brighton side who are comparatively no better than Carlisle in their own geographical region of the Puma Youth Alliance League, will give the young Blues real belief that they can go down to Manchester in the middle of January and make their Premier League opponents work very hard for a place in the final sixteen of the FA Youth Cup.
