| Things hot up this week as the majority of first round ties take place |
As is often the case in the FA Youth Cup the opening couple of games in one round took place before the last match in the previous round. Bury Town setting up a home tie with Walsall 24 hours after Cheltenham had thumped Exeter 4-0 on the road and Chesterfield had defeated Mansfield 4-1 at home in the first of many local derbies in the opening proper stage of the competition.
Of the other 38 games in the first round, a remarkable nine can also be described as local derbies, those being Rushden v Northampton, Charlton v Gillingham, Histon v Cambridge, Leyton Orient v Bromley, Swindon v Yeovil, Atherstone v Highgate, Milton Keynes Dons v Dunstable, AFC Wimbledon v Sutton United and Oldham v Stalybridge.
As for United, well we face Accrington on the road at 7pm on Wednesday night for the second time in two years, this season though that meeting comes a stage earlier. Carlisle won that second round game 3-0 last year in pretty easy fashion as Andy Cook and Ryan Bowman netted in the first-half and Liam Davison scored after the interval at the Crown Ground.
United having defeated Stanley 3-1 at home in the league just three days before that tie when Cook bagged a hat-trick. This year in the league the lads have already won 3-1 at Accrington in early September, Bowman with a brace and Matt Osmond being the goalscorers in that match.
Back to the cup though and last season after defeating Accrington in round two Carlisle went on to lose 3-1 at home to a useful looking Crewe side at the next stage of the competition. In the previous three seasons to that though the young Blues have twice reached the quarter-finals, but with a young side this year let's just start with a win at the Crown Ground on Wednesday evening and take it from there.
