FA Youth Cup - First Round Draw

The big prize
The draw against the Hatters, made at FA Headquarters this morning, means that Carlisle will face a team from their own division, the Puma Youth Alliance North West Conference, in the first round proper of the competition. The two sides have not faced each other yet this season and, due to the bizarre fixturing system in the league, will only play each other once - that being another home match for United at the start of February.

Last season the teams only played each other once in the league as well, that coming on the first day of the campaign on the old training pitch at Brunton Park. County thumping the Cumbrians 4-0 that day with Chris Coward being the main Hatters tormenter as he notched a hat-trick, with James Vincent scoring the other goal.

Fortunately for United though Coward, who signed a professional deal at Edgeley Park in the summer, is just over a month outside the qualifiying age for the competition this season. Centre-half James Tunnicliffe, who, like Coward, is currently on loan at Blue Square Prem1er crisis club Northwich Victoria, also misses out as he was over 18 years old on the 1st of September 2007.

With these two first year professionals now missing from the Stockport youth team ranks the Hatters have struggled a bit in the league this season. County currently sitting fourth bottom with two wins, a draw and five defeats from their eight games played, scoring seven but conceding an alarming seventeen at the rate of two goals a match.

Due to the rules of the competition the tie will be played at Brunton Park, more than likely under floodlights in the week commencing Monday the 5th of November. The draw is heavily regionalised at this stage so there are plenty of local derbies elsewhere in the fixtures, as well as many non-league teams who have already battled through three rounds in some instances before playing their final qualifying games in the coming fortnight.
