FA Youth Cup - Fifth Round Draw

The big prize
Two goals from Rhys Henry helped the Shrimpers into the last sixteen as they defeated Stoke City 3-1 in front of 1,004 spectators at Roots Hall tonight. James Lindie scored the first goal for the home side on four minutes though before Marc Grocott equalised for the Potters from the penalty spot just after the half-hour mark.

Southend belied playing a team from a division above throughout and they regained the lead when Henry netted from a deflected free-kick with 54 minutes on the clock. Henry then more or less ending the tie as a spectacle when a clearance from Stoke goalkeeper Danzelle Hamilton pinged back off his body and flew back into the City net with ten minutes to go.

So, the Shrimpers now face Carlisle in the fifth round at Brunton Park having, like the young Blues, fought through four rounds to make it to the last sixteen. Southend having beaten Croydon Athletic 3-1 at home, won 7-3 at home to Barnet, beaten Derby 4-1 at home, and then seen off Stoke City 3-1 in their run of four home fixtures in the FA Youth Cup this season.

Strikers James Lindie and Rhys Henry are the dangerman for Southend when they visit Brunton Park for the big round five clash on Wednesday the 30th of January. Hopefully though Carlisle can repeat their heroics of the last stage of the competition when they won 2-1 away to Manchester United and make it another great night to remember for youth team football at the club.
