Andy Cook - 32nd goal
It was the usual mix of the few professionals not in the first team reckoning along with the older youth team lads that took to the field tonight for this quarter-final tie against skilltrainingltd Northern League Division Two side Whitehaven. The part-timers actually having more followers there than the home side in a very poor attendance of no more than 70 spectators.

In a match understandably dominated by Carlisle it was the Blues who got in the first chance on 12 minutes after a quiet start to the game. Jonny Blake, after a one-two with Luke Joyce, striking a right-footed drive over the top from 22 yards out as he ran on from his right-back spot.

Joyce was involved at the other end three minutes later though as his awful pass across the back set up Haven's Craig Robson for a left-footed 25-yarder that was well tipped over the top by Alex Mitchell. On 17 minutes Andy Cook, from a Kevin Gall corner, saw his header from eight yards out expertly cleared off the line by Barrie Fowler. Cook then heading wide under pressure from a similar distance after Conor Tinnion's flag-kick in just seconds later.

Six minutes on and Mitchell made a good save for United as he pushed behind Mike Farrer's well-hit right-footed shot from just outside the Carlisle 'D', Kevin Holliday's corner though producing nothing for the visitors. After 25 minutes Gall then sticking in a cross from the right which went slightly behind Cook 12 yards out, Cook therefore putting a right-footed scissor kick well wide of the target.

Just after the half-hour mark and Cook held the ball up nicely before laying possession off to Gall. Joyce had timed his run into the box perfectly and he was bang on time to nod Gall's right-footed across back across Haven goalkeeper Craig Routledge and into the far corner of the net from a couple of yards past the penalty spot.

With 39 minutes gone Mitchell was able to catch on the bounce a Robson cross in from the left which just evaded the head of the running-in Graeme Lilley. The last action of a quiet first-half being a Farrer right-footed free-kick in from the right which Chris Lumsdon, eight yards out, could only head up in the air before the ball was cleared in a ruck of bodies at the Carlisle far-post.

The visitors made a change at the back during the interval when Dan Gullen replaced Carl McGrady, then in the 47th minute, after a Tom Aldred foul on Farrer on the left-angle of the United box, Robson curled the free-kick right-footed across goal and inches wide of the Carlisle far-post.

Six minutes later and a Gall corner in fell to Aldred at the back-stick, Aldred then setting the ball back to Lumsdon 20 yards out. Lumsdon though could only hit a right-footed effort with the inside of his boot inches wide of Routledge's left-hand upright. United though made it 2-0 with their next attack in the 54th minute, Blake feeding Gall for a cross in from the right which Cook headed down and across into the far corner of the Haven net from eight yards out.

With 57 minutes on the clock Blake and Cook played a nice one-two before Blake stuck a right-wing cross in that was only part-cleared straight to Cook just inside the box. Cook though unlucky to see his goalbound right-footed shot with the outside of his boot go wide off the body of Gullen, who was laying on the floor at the time, Gall's resultant flag-kick then coming to nothing.

Bang on the hour-mark and Cook made a bustling run forward that only resulted in a left-footed strike from 22 yards out that was pulled wide of the near-post. Carlisle then making their first substitution of the match midway through the half when Liam Davison replaced Blake and the Blues went to three at the back.

Moments later Cook firing a right-footed half-volley from the left-angle of the Haven box across goal and wide of the far-post. The 70th minute seeing both sides make a change in personnel when right-back Simon Lakeland came on in place of centre-half Jamie Cleary for United and David Dustin replaced Darren Donald for the visitors.

Five minutes on and Tinnion fed Cook for a right-footed 20-yard drive that was deflected out for a corner, Tinnion's well-placed ball in though again producing nothing for the Blues. The next two items of note in a quiet game being two more substitutions, John Seaton replacing Tinnion for the Blues on 78 minutes and Robbie Fowler, running over a touchline without pretending to snort it this time, coming on in place of Farrer for Haven two minutes later.

With six minutes left in the tie Lakeland worked a good crossing opportunity on the right, Routledge then only punching the ball straight out to Gall 15 yards from goal. His right-footed shot from there pinged away behind of the body off a retreating Routledge, and yes you've guessed it, United couldn't get anything out of the Michael Burns corner in.

Craig Lewis showing the Blues how it was done sixty seconds later when he thumped a six-yard header from a Gall flag-kick straight into the top corner of his own net. Gall himself missing the chance to make it 4-0 to Carlisle in the 87th minute, when, from a lovely Matt Duffy pass over the top, he could only, just outside the penalty box, knock the ball with his right boot past an advancing Routledge but wide of the Haven far-post.

The last chance of the game coming with almost the final kick of an extremely lengthy four minutes of injury time, a Burns corner in seeing Joyce volley right-footed and wide of the near-post from eight yards out. So, Carlisle are ahead of the game now after playing this tie six weeks before its scheduled date, their possible semi-final opponents being one of Harraby Catholic Club, Windscale, Mirehouse, Workington, Penrith Town or Wetheriggs.
