Gary Madine - two goals
United's reserves got their season back underway after the Christmas break tonight with what was a dead rubber between themselves and Sheffield United in the totesportcasino.com League Cup Group stages, neither side being able to qualify for the next stage of the competition.

The match took place at the Coach and Horses Ground in Dronfield, the home of Sheffield FC, Carlisle fielding a mix of professionals, trialists and youth teamers in the game. The trialist being Gavin Rothery, who was at Brunton Park for a trial spell last season, Matty James and Michael Burns, Rothery playing the full 90 minutes while James and Burns were on the field for a half apiece.

Early on Tom Aldred was forced to clear from almost off his own line after a David Carney goalbound chip for the Blades but the Cumbrians took the lead in the 15th minute. Kevin Gall, playing his first game in a Blue shirt since pre-season, smacking an excellent 18-yard volley into the back of the home net from a Simon Hackney cross in.

Carlisle made it 2-0 with 36 minutes on the clock, Burns, Hackney and Rothery all combining well for Gary Madine to finish neatly side-footed from just inside the Sheffield United penalty area. The Blues going into the break with that two goal advantage and a clean sheet, that being no mean feat with midfielder Grant Smith playing out of position at centre-half.

Madine netted again after 75 minutes to make it 3-0 to the Cumbrians, the young striker this time getting on the end of a Gall pass in to fire home from 18 yards out. Gall then just missing the chance to make the final scoreline 4-0 when he rattled the post late on with a right-footed shot. United's next second-string match coming on Monday night at 7pm when they face Morecambe in a league fixture at Brunton Park.
