In the optional to enter League Cup Morecambe went down 3-2 at the Riverside Stadium against Middlesbrough, Seb Hines giving the home side a first-half lead before Kieran Edwards made it 2-0 on 65 minutes. The Shrimps did though pull a goal back through Gavin Clark ten minutes later but 'Boro's two goal advantage was restored in the last minute when Cameron Park netted. Morecambe did though manage to get another goal in injury time when Marvin Williams scored.

Elsewhere in Group Two Oldham coasted to a 3-0 at home to Preston, in a match that was played at Bower Fold, Stalybridge Celtic FC. The Latics had to wait until the second-half to get all their goals though, Ferenc Fodor opening the scoring immediately after the interval with Kieran Lee then making it 2-0 on 56 minutes. Ryan Brooke then making sure of all three points for Oldham when he netted with 15 minutes to go.

As we already know Carlisle had an easy 3-0 win at Accrington Stanley in the league to move five points clear at the top of the table, Jonny Blake, Tom Aldred and Tony Kane the United scorers.
