The trio opting to take part in the non-compulsory league cup, although Tranmere might be wishing they hadn't as they were thumped 4-1 at Leicester's Walkers Stadium in Group One. DJ Campbell with a brace, Max Gradel and Luke O'Neill scoring for City while Grenadian international Kithson Bain was on the scoresheet for Rovers.

There were fixed fortunes meanwhile in Group Two for our divisional rivals as first Morecambe lost 1-0 to a Nathan Clarke goal in the opening minute at Bradford City's Coral Windows Stadium. Preston though thrashed Middlesbrough 5-1 at the QED Stadium, Bamber Bridge to get their cup campaign off to a flyer.

A double from Jamie Douglas, a penalty from Adam Barton and strikes from youth teamers Neil Dougan and Jamie Proctor being the North End ammunition while Gary Martin got the only goal for a young Middlesbrough side. Next week sees little going on in the divison as only Morecambe and Oldham lock horns at Christie Park, Tranmere though again involved in cup action - this time at Sheffield United.
