Table-toppers Preston are doing their best at the moment to keep at bay (get it?) a Morecambe side with three games in hand. North End winning again at Deepdale 2-1 against Blackpool as all the goals came in the first-half. The Seasiders taking the lead through Simon Wiles on 24 minutes before yet another brace in the reserves from Neil Mellor after 40 and 42 minutes secured all three points for the Lilywhites.

Morecambe's efforts to keep up with Preston couldn't have gone much worse as they were absolutely hammered 7-1 at Christie Park at home to Burnley, that despite the Shrimps being 1-0 up at half-time thanks to a Carl Baker penalty. An amazing second-half for the Clarets then saw them score seven though, through manager Owen Coyle (53 and 55), Alex McDonald (62), an Alan Mahon eight-minute hat-trick (74, 78 and 82 pen) and finally Michael Duff (90).

In a pre-match kick-off quirk three games involved the top six and the other three involved the bottom six, the first of those being Wrexham's 3-0 win at Accrington Stanley. The goals for the Red Dragons at the Fraser Eagle Stadium coming from two Trinidadians, Josh Johnson opening the scoring on 23 minutes before Silvio Spann bagged a double just after both the half-hour and hour-marks.

Tranmere defeated local rivals Chester 2-0 at the Deva Stadium with a goal in either half of the game. Calvin Zola setting up Adnan Ahmed for the Rovers opener with ten minutes on the clock, before Chris Curran netted midway through the second period after working a neat one-two with Mike Jones.

Right down in the wooden-spoon world of the table near neighbours Rochdale and Bury fought out a 1-1 draw at Dark Lane, the home of Rossendale United FC. Dale's Joe Thompson equalising for the "home" side on 75 minutes after the Shakers had taken the lead within the first ten minutes of the match.

As we already know a poor performance from the United second-string saw them defeated 3-0 at Brunton Park against Manchester City. Carlisle's next chance to stop their slide down the table coming away to Burnley, in a match that will be played at Accrington Stanley's Fraser Eagle Stadium on Wednesday night in a 7pm kick-off.
