Preston remain in top spot for now though after defeating Tranmere 2-0 at Prenton Park on Monday afternoon, both the North End goals coming from regular Lilywhites reserves scorer Neil Mellor. Danny Moran and Craig Curran having the best chances in the game for a Rovers side who were unable to trouble the scorers.

Bizarrely, second-placed Morecambe were unable to raise a team for an away match with Wrexham on Monday night but were then able to put out a strong side to defeat the Red Dragons 5-4 at Globe Way, Buckley Town FC just two days later. Considering nine goals were scored it was a surprise that the first one didn't come until 36 minutes when Marc Williams netted for the home side.

Mike Carvill then made it 2-0 to Wrexham on 43 minutes before Aaron Taylor scored for the visitors bang on the half-time whistle. The Shrimps then bagging the next four goals in the game through Jon Newby (62), Paul Lloyd (64 and 75) and Taylor again on 77 minutes. Wrexham making it just too little too late, after being 2-0 up, when Wes Baynes and Josh Johnson scored in the final three minutes of the game.

Manchester City remain in fifth after defeating rock-bottom Rochdale 2-1 at the Regional Athletics Arena on Tuesday. Robbie Mak opened the scoring for the home side on 24 minutes before Jake Richardson equalised for the visitors midway through the second-half. It was a 13th defeat from 18 games for 'Dale though when Ian Daly bundled home a late City winner with just two minutes to go.

In the mid-table reaches Burnley won 1-0 at home to Chester at Accrington Stanley's Fraser Eagle Stadium on Wednesday night. Steve Jones scoring the only goal of the game for a Clarets side who included 21-year old midfielder Ritchie Jones, on trial from Manchester United, in their starting eleven.

Bury leapfrogged Accrington Stanley and sent the Reds to second bottom in the division with a 3-1 win at home, in a match played at the Inn2gether Stadium, Radcliffe Borough FC. The three goals for the Shakers, all in the second-half, coming from a Luke Holmes brace and a single strike from Dale Stephens.

As we already know a young United side lost 2-1 away to Blackpool last night at Highbury, Fleetwood Town FC, the Blues having been 1-0 up at the break thanks to Andy Cook's goal. Carlisle's next chance to get back to winning ways in the second-string league coming in six days time when they play Blackpool at home on Wednesday night in a 7pm kick-off at Brunton Park.
