In the clash between first and third in the division Morecambe, who have three games in hand on leaders Preston, took the upper hand in the title race with a thumping 4-0 win over North End at Christie Park on Thursday night. A Jon Newby brace and a single strike from Wayne Curtis already seeing the Shrimps 3-0 up at the break before Jamie Burns made the final scoreline 4-0 after 74 minutes.

With Rochdale against Blackpool falling foul of the weather, Burnley's 2-1 win at Tranmere was the only other game on apart from Carlisle's. The Clarets taking all three points at Prenton Park, after being 1-0 down to a Terry Gornell strike for Rovers, thanks to goals from Michael Duff and a late winner from Alex-Rae Harvey. The one bright spot on the night for Tranmere being Chris Shuker playing the full 90 minutes as he makes his way back from a serious knee injury.

As we already know United defeated Manchester City 3-2 at the Regional Athletics Arena on Wednesday afternoon, the Carlisle goals coming from Gary Madine, Stephen Hindmarch and Luke Joyce. United's next chance to keep their second-string title chase going coming next Wednesday night when they play away to Blackpool in a match that will kick-off at 7pm at Highbury, the home of Fleetwood Town FC.
