The Lilywhites move above Chester at the top of the table after hammering Accrington 6-1 at the Fraser Eagle Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The sides actually going in level at the break when the home side equalised after Neil Mellor had given North End the lead early in the game.

A strong Preston side then coasting clear after the interval with Mellor, who can't stop scoring in the reserves, grabbing a hat-trick and Simon Whaley notching a brace, while Brett Ormerod must be feeling a little left out in the North End striking ranks after only scoring once in the match.

In the only other game in the division Bury won 2-0 at home to Rochdale in a match played at the Inn2gether Stadium, Radcliffe Borough FC. Respective goals in either half from from Jack Dorney and Jordan Stepian seeing the Shakers move up to eighth in the table.

Three of the sides in the league were involved in the Pontin's League Cup, a competiton that is optional for sides to enter. Chester losing 2-1 to Tranmere at Prenton Park, Ashley Taylor and Chris Curran netting for Rovers within the first 17 minutes, with City only able to grab a consolation goal courtesy of Kevin Sandwith with just five minutes to go.

In the other League Cup game involving a side in our division Morecambe came away from Huddersfield with a point after a six-goal thriller at the Galpharm Stadium. The Shrimps doing it the hard way as well after coming back from 3-0 down after just 20 minutes, the Town goals coming from Danny Schofield and a Daniel Broadbent brace, while Jon Newby scored twice and Huddersfield's Leigh Franks put through his own net to complete a remarkable comeback for the visitors.

Carlisle had a week off this week but they get back to action next Wednesday night in a 7pm kick-off at Brunton Park when they face the enviable task of trying to keep a clean sheet against table-topping Preston. Second-string Lilywhites boss Billy Barr will no doubt make an appearance although it seems extremely unlikely that Karl Hawley will take any part in the match.
