Only Bury can catch the Latics now, and that just on goal difference, with the Shakers sitting nine points behind their near-neighbours with three games left to play. Two goals in three minutes were enough to secure a tenth win of the season for Oldham at home to Chester in a match played at Bower Fold, Stalybridge Celtic FC, first-year scholar Ross Thaker the Latics hero as he bagged a brace in double quick time around the 50 minute mark.

Bury, Preston and Tranmere look to be fighting it out for the runners-up spot in the division, although the second place hopes of Rovers took a jolt when they lost 1-0 at Blackpool. Tranmere going down to the only goal of the game on the road against the Seasiders, at Highbury, Fleetwood Town FC, when Simon Gillett bundled home the rebound after Rovers keeper Ben Hinchcliffe had saved his spot-kick on 37 minutes.

The Shakers and the Lilywhites shared the spoils on Wednesday night in a 2-2 draw at the Inn2gether Stadium, Radcliffe Borough FC. Bury taking the lead twice through Marc Pugh and Ryan Hall only to be pegged back by North End's Neil Mellor on each occasion, Mellor's second strike coming from the penalty spot in the last minute to take his tally up to a remarkable 12 goals in his last nine second-string outings.

United were in action twice this week as they looked to make some headway on their end-of-season fixture backlog. A young Blues side drawing 1-1 at Wrexham on Monday after going a goal to the good through Dan Kirkup, and then losing 3-1 at Rochdale on Wednesday, again after going ahead from an early Paul Arnison spot-kick. The Cumbrians are in action next at home to Wrexham on Wednesday afternoon needing to pick up at least two points from their last two fixtures to avoid picking up the wooden spoon.
