Oldham continued their impressive form top at the top of the table with a 3-1 win away to Manchester City at the Regional Athletic Arena SportCity (next to the City of Manchester Stadium) on Tuesday night, the Latics winning their fourth game from five. The Citizens are struggling in their first season in the league but it is no surprise bearing in mind that it is effectively their third team on show containing wholly 16 to 18-year olds. City's official reserve side playing in the FA Reserve League, a competition for Premership second-string sides.

Tuesday night's win for the Latics over City saw the home side actually take the lead in the 29th minute through a low drive from Adam Clayton. The visitors soon levelled though two minutes later when Matty Wolfenden fired home from close-range following some confusion in the hosts defence. With just eight minutes left substitute Lewis Alessandra, on for Wolfenden, gave the visitors a deserved lead as he chased down a through ball and lobbed a neat finish home over the head of Laurence Matthewson. Chris Hall wrapping up the three points two minutes from time for Oldham as he fired home the rebound after Matthewson had saved Alessandra's initial shot.

Bury climbed up to fourth in the table on the back of a 2-1 win away to local rivals Rochdale, the match played at Dark Lane - the home of Rossendale United FC. Ex-Dale man David Flitcroft giving the Shakers the lead midway through the first-half with a rasping 20-yard drive, the visitors doubling their lead two minutes after the interval when Tom Clarkson powered home a header from a cross in by Michael Allen. Rochdale pulled a goal back bang on the hour-mark through a neat Gary Brown finish but they couldn't make any further inroads on a well-drilled Shakers defence who held out for the 2-1 victory.

Accrington Stanley maintained their third spot in the table with a 2-2 draw at Wrexham, the game taking place at Globe Way, Buckley Town FC. In a classic game of two halves the hosts were 2-0 up at the break, the goals coming from Jon Newby on 27 minutes and Jamie Reed ten minutes later. Stanley came roaring back after the break though and reduced the deficit to one goal on 63 minutes courtesy of ex-Blackpool striker Andy Mangan, David Brown making sure the visitors went home with a share of the spoils as he bagged Accrington's equaliser with ten minutes left.

Blackpool didn't need Mangan though as they hammered Chester 4-0 at the Saunders Honda Stadium, the second-bottom Blues now having conceded ten goals in their first four matches. Matthew Blinkhorn and Rory Prendergast putting the Seasiders 2-0 ahead at the break, with further second-half goals from a Sean Paterson penalty and Keigan Parker completing the rout.

As we know a youthful United side defeated Billy Barr's Preston North End second-string 2-0 last night at Brunton Park through goals from James Earl and Pete Ferris. Due to a full list of League One and Two fixtures next week there are no reserve fixtures scheduled, although Bury play Oldham in the Lancashire Senior Cup and Chester meet Shrewsbury in the Pontin's Holiday League Cup, both matches on Wednesday afternoon. Carlisle's next game meanwhile is away to Blackpool at Highbury, the home of Fleetwood Town FC, on Wednesday the 4th of October at 7pm.
