Rovers moved up to second in the table as they took all three points at Rivacre Park, the home of Vauxhall Motors FC, while North End slipped to their second defeat in their first two games. The home side took the lead after 25 minutes when a corner curled in from the right by Luke Holden saw the Lilywhites defence playing statues, that lapse in concentration by the visitors defence allowing Steve Jennings to nip in and knock the ball home from close-range.

North End equalised on 38 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after a foul on Ashley Parillon by Danny Holmes, ex-Liverpool star Neil Mellor converting the subsequent spot-kick to bring Preston level. Rovers weren't to be denied though and they regained the lead with 62 minutes on the clock, Holden again involved as his cross to the far-post was headed in by Steve Davies. Tranmere made sure of the win with 12 minutes to go in the match when Olly James' right-wing cross was headed back across goal by Carl Tremarco and after controlling the ball, Zola sent an acrobatic scissors kick into the top corner of the Preston net from eight yards out to seal a deserved Rovers victory.
