Oldham went to the top of the table on Wednesday night with a 4-1 home thumping of Accrington Stanley, with a trialist from abroad again finding his way on to the Latics scoresheet. Last week it was Diego Cervero with one goal and this week it was DR Congolese striker Patrick Dimbala, formerly of Belgian sides Mouscron and Gent, who doubled that tally as he bagged a brace. The other goals coming from Mark Hughes and Chris Taylor after an Andy Mangan penalty had given Accrington the lead.

A youthful Manchester City side drew 1-1 away to Chester City at the Saunders Honda Stadium. The Citizens had taken the lead when Ashley Grimes finished from close range after only seven minutes but Chester soon grabbed an equaliser twelve minutes later through Mark Cadwallader with a far post header. Both sides had chances to win the game in the second-half but neither team could make the breakthrough and claim a winning goal.

Wrexham condemned Blackpool to two straight defeats at the start of the season at Buckley Town on Monday night, as the Red Dragons ran out 3-1 winners. The home side grabbing all their three goals in the first-half through a double from Jamie Reed on nine minutes and a penalty on 33, Marc Williams bagging the other goal five minutes before the interval. Trialist Craig Reid (ex-Coventry) netted a second-half consolation for the Seasiders in front of a crowd of 129 spectators, but Wrexham were never really threatened and ran out easy winners.

Preston's scheduled game at Tranmere Rovers was postponed until next week due to North End's involvement in the Lancashire Senior Cup on Monday night. The Lilywhites going down 7-2 at Deepdale at home to Manchester United, Lewis Neal and Brian Stock scoring the goals for the home side, Giuseppe Rossi with a brace, Phil Marsh netting two, Chris Eagles, Daniel Rose and David Jones bagging the goals for the Red Devils. The tie also saw the return to action of England international Alan Smith, the United striker playing the first 66 minutes of the match after breaking his leg and dislocating an ankle in the FA Cup in February.

Carlisle won their opening game of the season against Rochdale 3-2, the Cumbrians goals coming from a Pete Ferris brace and Dan Kirkup, with Kristian Bowden and Joe Thompson replying for the 'Dale. The Blues play their second match of the campaign next Wednesday afternoon at 2pm when they face Bury at the Inn2gether Stadium, the home of Radcliffe Borough FC.
