Chris Lumsdon - return to action
Carlisle will have been wishing that their ten-week absence from second-string duties had continued after this thumping at Deepdale today. Both managers fielded a mixture of youth and experience for the clash but it was the free-scoring forward line of the home side that would come out well on top in a match Cumbrians reserve team boss Greg Abbott will want to forget.

Patrick Agyemang started the rout for the Lilywhites in the 13th minute when he finished well after being set up by a quick throw out from keeper Wayne Henderson to Callum Davidson. Two minutes later North End netted again when ex-Liverpool striker Neil Mellor was brought down for a penalty by Blues glovesman Adam Bradley, Mellor then dusting himself down to successfully convert the spot-kick.

That became three goals in five minutes as Preston went 3-0 up on eighteen minutes when Mellor netted again, ths time following a low cross in from the right by Agyemang. Shaun Vipond forced Henderson into a save seven minutes later with Carlisle's only real chance of the game, then shortly afterwards Ashley Parillon was yellow-carded for a foul on Blues frontman Stephen Hindmarch.

Agyemang was again the provider for the Preston fourth on 32 minutes as he raced onto a Danny Finch through ball before setting up Parillon for a neat finish into the back of the Cumbrians net from 18 yards out. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse it did only 90 seconds later when Mellor notched his second hat-trick in successive reserve games, Parillon and Agyemang again involved as Mellor finished the move clinically from inside the United box.

With the damage done Mellor was substituted shortly afterwards with Ashley Higgins taking his place, meanwhile during the break Agyemang was also replaced, Nathan Fairhurst coming on for the Ghanian striker. Sadly things got underway in the second period the way they had in the opening one when it was the two substitutes combining to set up Davidson to hammer an unstoppable drive past Bradley from the edge of the Blues box to make the scoreline a sorry-looking 6-0.

Fortunately for the Cumbrians that was the end of the scoring for the afternoon as the game slowed down a lot after the high tempo of the early stages. About the only positives that Carlisle could take from the match were the returns of midfielder Chris Lumsdon and Neale McDermott from respective ankle and back problems, even that though was marred by the sight of centre-half Liam Atkin and left-back Matthew Blake leaving the field early due to injuries.
