United's unbeaten start to the season coming crashing down around their ears as, pretty much a Citizens under-19s side, raced into a 4-0 half-time lead. With a couple of recent first-team injuries and illnesses Carlisle's starting eleven wasn't as strong as it had been at Morecambe last week and it also included Irish defensive trialist Stephen Maher.

Blues skipper Michael Bridges forced a good save out of City goalkeeper Tobias Johansen early on but it was the home side that took the lead on five minutes when 17-year old striker Jack Redshaw knocked home the rebound after after Angelos Tsiaklis's 25-yard drive had come back off the United crossbar.

Grant Smith then hit the City crossbar with a Carlisle free-kick from a similar distance but it was the Mancunians who scored next again just moments later. Redshaw getting on the scoresheet again as he converted an Adrian Cieslewicz cross in from the right. Cieslewicz then scoring himself shortly afterwards when he got on the end of a ball forward from Omar Elabdellaoui to chip over advancing United goalkeeper Chris Howarth.

You got the feeling it really wasn't going to be Carlisle's lucky night when they hit the crossbar once more only for City to score almost straight away again. Redshaw making a powerful run forward and shooting past Howarth into the bottom corner of the Cumbrians net to claim his hat-trick before the interval.

City began to make the scoreline embarrassing when they notched their fifth goal in the 52nd minute. Ben Morris's corner in seeing Howarth unable to get to the centre, and as the ball was flicked on at the United near-post Redshaw was again the player in the right place for the fourth time as he headed into the back of the Carlisle net.

United finally got themselves onto the scoresheet late on, after substitute Andy Cook had earlier missed a good chance, when Jeff Smith made a good run down the left and Connor Tinnion was on-hand at the City back-post to knock home Smith's cross. The Blues getting another consolation goal in injury time when Grant Smith headed in from Tinnion's corner.
