Despite being three goals down after the first 50 minutes the Cumbrians did actually mount the first attack of the match when wantaway midfielder Adam Murray found James Earl at the Bury back-post, Earl's fierce drive, fortunately for the Shakers going straight at keeper Peter Collinge. After eight minutes John Fitzgerald headed a Wayne Carlisle corner over the bar as the home side started to come into the game.

Ten minutes later it was Fitzgerald who was again in the thick of the action as he could only send his header from a Michael Wolski cross straight into the arms of Blues glovesman, and ex-Bury loanee, Anthony Williams from twelve yards out. Daryl Taylor replaced the injured David Worral for the Shakers on 20 minutes and remarkably put Bury into the lead with his first touch of the ball. Marc Goodfellow finding Taylor with a slide-rule pass into the United box, Taylor then flicking his effort under the advancing Williams and into the back of the Cumbrians net.

The Blues were playing some nice stuff at times without really showing any signs of getting a finishing touch and it was the home side who doubled their lead bang on the half-time whistle. Goodfellow the man to capitalise on some hesitation from Williams coming out for a Scott McNiven free-kick up, Goodfellow able to take a quick touch on the bounce then easily slam the ball home into an unguarded net to send the Shakers into the break two goals to the good.

That wasn't the worst of it for Carlisle though as Bury went 3-0 up two minutes after the interval, Matt Tipton and Taylor combining nicely for Carlisle to put a ball in across the face of the United goal, Goodfellow getting on the end of it to volley home into the roof of the net past Williams. The home side could even have increased their lead as the half wore on, Tipton and Goodfellow both bringing good saves out of Williams.

The Shakers were to regret not taking those chances though as the amazing late drama got underway in the 82nd minute when the Cumbrians pulled their first goal back. Danny Livesey getting on the end of a Murray corner in to head powerfully into the net past Collinge from eight yards out. That gave the Blues some real impetus and they made the score 3-2 four minutes later, young striker Stephen Hindmarch making a good run forward before firing a 15-yard drive across Collinge and into the back of the Bury net.

The comeback was complete deep into injury time as the home side dropped deeper and deeper, the Shakers getting visibly more nervous waiting for the final whistle. Murray's cross in seeing Collinge come out to claim it only to collide with his own defender in Andy Parrish, the ball breaking free to Livesey, who was pushing forward looking for a late leveller, leaving the Carlisle centre-half with the simple task of sweeping his effort into an unguarded net from close range to make the final score 3-3 on a remarkable afternoon.
