United sent a medium-strength side down to the Interlink Express Stadium in Accrington for their first fixture of the 2005-06 season in the Pontin’s Holidays League Division One West.

Burnley started as the brighter side but it was United who took the lead early in the first half through Glenn Murray. A long ball forward was taken down by recent signing Jamie McClen, who crossed for Murray to poke home with a first-time finish.

The good feeling didn’t last long though as a short time later the score was 1-1 and the Blues were down to ten men following the harsh dismissal of Lee Andrews. The referee deemed "Bones" to have been the last man when he brought down Clarets winger Rob Turner and also decided the incident had occurred inside the area. Keiren Westwood saved the penalty but Paul Casey was there to roll in the rebound from his missed spot kick.

Burnley scored two more goals shortly after half-time to put the game well out of United’s reach. The first of those two came when the ball started on the left of the field and was swiftly moved along the forward line, through Kyle Lafferty and out to Marc Pugh on the wing. It took two attempts to get the ball across but when he did it arrowed onto the foot of Turner who couldn’t miss.

The second was scored by Casey again who was on the spot to finish off a move involving Connor Smith and Turner, to put United 3-1 down.

The Clarets rubbed salt into the wounds of United with a late goal as Casey completed his hat-trick with a deflected drive to give Burnley a 4-1 victory.

Reserve team coach Billy Barr spoke to www.carlisleunited.co.uk about the defeat saying :

"It was disappointing as up until the sending off it had been a fairly even match but after that the game went away from us. We started the game with three YTS players and brought on another three during the game, so it was all experience for the younger lads to learn from. Keiren Westwood took a knock in the game, we will have to see how he is tomorrow. All in all not the start to the season we had wanted but we'll deal with it and move on."
