What A Load Of Old Balls (Part Two)

The FA Cup
They kept us waiting last year when we were 74th out of the goldfish bowl for a dire draw at Swindon, and this season it was a long wait as well. This time it was worth it though as being the 71st ball out, drawn by ex-Manchester United star Paul Parker, meant we would face Grimsby at Brunton Park in the first round of the 2007-08 FA Cup when they were pulled out of the bowl next by one-time Chelsea man John Hollins.

United have only met the Mariners once before in the history of the FA Cup. That coming almost 100 years ago in the 1907-08 season when Carlisle, then a non-league club playing in the Northern Premier League, were thrashed 6-2 at Blundell Park by Football League Division Two side Grimsby Town in the second round.

The Cumbrians will be firm favourites this time around though as, currently sitting top of League One, they face a Town side who have struggled desperately in League Two for the last two seasons after almost being promoted alongside Carlisle in 2006. The Mariners at the moment sitting 21st in the basement division just two points above the relegation drop-zone.

A home tie for Carlisle in the first round is somewhat of a rareity too as the last time they played a game at Brunton Park at this stage of the competition was six seasons ago in the 2002-03 campaign. United looking to take advantage of those home comforts when they a face a Town side, who have won only once away from Blundell Park all season, when the tie is played on Saturday the 10th of November.
