What A Load Of Old Balls (Part Three)

The FA Cup
A tepid effort from United saw them grab a late leveller at home to League Two strugglers Grimsby yesterday afternoon to ensure that a replay would be needed to decide which club makes it into Round Two of the FA Cup. Both sides finding out later today who they might face at the next stage following the completion of the Torquay v Yeovil tie live on BBC1.

The draw for the Second Round Proper will be made from FA headquarters in Soho Square at 5.15pm this evening and will be hosted by Sir Trevor Brooking, while the balls will be drawn out by Cyrille Regis and Steve Hodge who did battle in Coventry's 3-2 FA Cup final win over Tottenham in 1987.

The Cumbrians will be hoping to make it to the Third Round of the competition for the first time since the 2000-01 season when they were given a dream tie. A repeat of that draw when over 15,000 packed into Brunton Park to see a Sylvian Wiltord goal clinch a 1-0 victory for Arsenal would be very nice.

Not only is it a good chance to progress to the Third Round for a potential payday but there is also the opportunity to stick another £40,000 in the coffers on the way if the Blues can defeat Grimsby in their First Round replay and then succeed in Round Two. The prize fund breaks down thus :

Fourth Round Qualifying Winners - £10,000
First Round Proper Winners - £16,000
Second Round Proper Winners - £24,000
Third Round Proper Winners - £40,000
Fourth Round Proper Winners - £60,000
Fifth Round Proper Winners - £120,000
Sixth Round Proper Winners - £300,000
Semi-Final Winners - £900,000
Competition Winner - £1,000,000

In the Second Round Proper the draw is NOT regionalised so if the Blues are given an away day we could find ourselves anywhere from Hartlepool to Yeovil.

The draw will be broadcast live on BBC1, the FA website and Sky Sports News and Blues fans will be on tenterhooks as we wait for the number THIRTY-SIX ball to appear and the title of Carlisle United or Grimsby Town to be read out.
