United Step Into Number Ten

The FA Cup
A total of 64 non-league teams will be competing this Saturday afternoon for 32 spots in the First Round Proper of the 2008-09 FA Cup. The 48 clubs in the bottom two rungs of the Coca-Cola Football League will already be waiting for them, having received a bye to that stage.

The teams that do make it through the Fourth Qualifying Round will earn themselves £12,500 for the privilege. That is a tidy sum for any non-league club and a good run in the FA Cup often sets up some of the smaller clubs at that level for a season or two.

The draw for the First Round Proper will be then made from FA headquarters in Soho Square at 1pm on Sunday afternoon and will be hosted on ITV1 by Jim Rosenthal, while the balls will be drawn out by ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown and former Spurs midfielder Ossie Ardiles.

The Cumbrians will be hoping to make the Third Round of the competition for the first time since the 2000-01 season when they were given a dream tie. A repeat of that draw when over 15,000 packed into Brunton Park to see a Sylvian Wiltord goal clinch a 1-0 victory for Arsenal would be very nice.

Not only is it a good chance to progress to the Third Round for a potential payday but there is also the opportunity to stick £50,000 in the coffers on the way. The prize fund breaks down thus :

Fourth Round Qualifying Winners - £12,500
First Round Proper Winners - £20,000
Second Round Proper Winners - £30,000
Third Round Proper Winners - £75,000
Fourth Round Proper Winners - £100,000
Fifth Round Proper Winners - £200,000
Sixth Round Proper Winners - £400,000
Semi-Final Losers - £500,000
Semi-Final Winners - £1,000,000
Final Loser - £1,000,000
Final Winner - £2,000,000

In the First Round Proper the draw is NOT regionalised so if the Blues are given an away day we could find ourselves anywhere from Hartlepool to Yeovil.

The draw will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Cumbria, the FA website and ITV and Blues fans will be on tenterhooks as we wait for the number TEN ball to appear and the name of Carlisle United to be read out.
