The Carling Cup
The draw was made at 9.30am this morning and the end result was the unseeded number 21 ball of Carlisle United taking on the seeded number 10 ball of Oldham Athletic at Brunton Park on Tuesday the 11th of August at 7.45pm.

The Blues hoping to improve on the only other time they have faced the Latics in the League Cup, that being a 7-5 aggregate defeat in the 1987-88 second round. Carlisle winning the first leg 4-3 in front of 2,271 spectators at Brunton Park before going down to a hefty 4-1 defeat in the reverse fixture at Boundary Park two weeks later.

These days though the competition is only played over one leg at the opening stage and that format suits United down to the ground. The Cumbrians having won 20 of the 32 games played between the two sides at Brunton Park over the years, nine having finished level, with Oldham tasting victory in just three matches.

Last season in League One, in which Carlisle scraped out of the relegation zone to finish 20th on the last day of the season and Oldham came tenth, the two sides drew 1-1 in the league at the home of the Cumbrians. Michael Bridges having given United a 44th minute lead from the penalty spot before Neal Eardley lashed home a free-kick one minute from time to ensure that honours finished even.

Carlisle boss Greg Abbott commenting to BBC Radio Cumbria on today's draw :

" Getting Oldham at home just tells you that the season is nearly upon us again. It seems to be just five minutes ago since we were playing Millwall in the last game of the season, and already we are talking about next season. It has come quickly, but it is a good draw, I think that all you can hope for at this stage is a home draw.

" They were one of the better sides in the division last season so it will be a tough game, but it is a chance for us to get a home game under our belt and hopefully progress. It is a competition that we would like to do better than we have done in recent seasons to be honest with you. There are some nice games along the way if you can get through the early rounds. "
