United Get Ipswich In Capital One Cup

Last updated : 15 August 2012 By Thetashkentterror

It's been a long time since the two sides have played each other at Brunton Park, infact they have only met four times in Cumbria at all. The last of those coming in the old Divsion One in that 1974-75 season when Carlisle won 2-1 in mid-January thanks to goals from Frank Clarke and Joe Laidlaw, while Trevor Whymark found the net for Town in front of 13,054 spectators.

United meanwhile having beaten Ipswich at Brunton Park the three other times they faced each other too, all of those victories coming in the mid to late 60s in the old Second Division courtesy of 3-1, 2-1 and 4-1 scorelines. The league being the mainstay of action between the clubs as bar the four reverse fixtures at Portman Road, cup games have only come around twice with Carlisle losing twice in Suffolk in the FA Cup, 2-0 in February 1967 and 3-2 in January 1979.

As far as current connections go there are no former United players in the Ipswich squad, some of whom finished in 15th place in the Championship last season, but if I was Carlisle-born ex-Ipswich defender Kevin Beattie then I'd think about leaving the phone off the hook for the next couple of weeks before the second round tie takes place in the week commencing Monday 27th August. The rest of the matches in the draw which was made, to a degree, this lunchtime being as follows:
