After defeating Penrith 2-0 in round three of the Cumberland Cup last season, in a tie switched to a soggy Frenchfields, thanks to goals from Andy Cook and Ben Marshall, Carlisle have once more been drawn at home to the other Blues, this time in the quarter-finals. United having this year already defeated Penrith 3-2 in a pre-season friendly at Frenchfields in which Mark Gillespie, Steven Swinglehurst, Danny Livesey, Liam Noble and Paddy Madden all featured from the Carlisle senior ranks, with Madden himself grabbing all three United goals.

As far as regular season football is concerned, Penrith have been struggling a little in the STL Northern League Division One as they currently sit 15th of 22 teams with a record of seven wins, one draw and eleven defeats from their nineteen games played so far. Meanwhile, to make it to the quarter-finals of the Cumberland Cup and a game against Carlisle which should be played in early March, the Frenchfields side won 7-0 at Greystoke in round two before being victorious 3-1 at Cleator Moor Celtic in the third round.
