It has been evident for a good while that 35-year old Aranalde was on his way out and that has proven to be the case. The popular Basque left-back, signed in the summer of 2005 on a free transfer from Walsall, leaving the club after making 125 starts, one substitute appearance and scoring seven goals.
On the other side of the defence Arnison departs Brunton Park almost five years after signing on a free transfer from Hartlepool. The 30-year old, second choice at right-back to David Raven this season, having made 111 starts, 33 substitute appearances and scoring just one goal, against Torquay in the 2003-04 season, in Carlisle colours.
Finally comes 18-year old goalkeeper Grant Carson who leaves having never appeared for the first team at any stage. Carson, often only a back-up to youth team goalkeeper Alex Mitchell before being awarded a six-month professional contract at Christmas, not being a surprising departure from the United squad.
Despite still having a year left on his current contract Blues frontman Kevin Gall has been made available on a free transfer, the 26-year old having found first-team opportunities extremely limited at Brunton Park this season. Meanwhile the extended one-year deals offered to Joyce and Grant Smith have yet to be agreed and finalised, but they do mean that the current Carlisle squad, with summer contract end dates in brackets, is as follows :
