28-year old Smith was originally snapped up Blues boss John Ward in mid-January this year as an out-of-contract free agent. The Irvine-born midfielder having previously featured for, breath deeply, Brighton & Hove Albion, Wycombe Wanderers, Reading, Hearts, Livingston, Clydebank, Sheffield United, Halifax Town, Plymouth Argyle, Swindon Town, Bristol City, Cheltenham Town, Walsall, Dundee United, Hibernian, HJK Helsinki and Klubi-04.

In his four month spell with the Cumbrians last season Smith made 17 starts, one substitute appearance and scored one goal - that strike coming in an excellent 3-0 win at Leyton Orient in late March. United boss John Ward obviously liked what he saw from the Scot and so offered him a further one-year deal, which Smith has signed this afternoon.
