With Simon Hackney leaving Brunton Park for Colchester in a £100,000 deal back in January, and his replacement from Preston in Lewis Neal, having been released at the end of the season, Greg Abbott's search for a new boy on the left flank has ended today. The currently out-of-contract Robson coming across the north of England to Carlisle after turning down a fresh deal to remain with the 'Pools at Victoria Park.

Their Director of Sport Chris Turner commenting to the official Hartlepool website on that decision at the time :

"The Club made Matty Robson a deal which we think is a fair deal and he has turned it down. He feels he deserves something else so Matty has decided he wants to leave Hartlepool and we wish him all the best. Everybody had his valuation at the Club - I gave Matty his debut seven years ago and he has been in and out of the team all through the season with different managers. So maybe this is the right time for him to move on to pastures new."

As Turner has indicated, Robson has spent the whole of his career so far with Hartlepool after coming through the youth ranks, the Durham-born winger making his debut at the age of 17 in a 5-0 Football League Trophy hammering at Tranmere. The 24-year old going to make 119 starts and 51 substitute appearances, while scoring 10 goals, in his time at Victoria Park.

Now though Robson has decided to move on and United have beaten off competition from Swindon to sign him, former 'Pools boss Danny Wilson having been in talks with the pacey winger earlier this month. Abbott no doubt attracted by the availability of a player on a free transfer who can also fill in at left-back if required, Robson's first job though is to make the spot on the left side of midfield his own when pre-season training starts in eleven days time.
