Reid All About It For United

New Blue Paul Reid
Almost eight years after leaving United as an 18-year old to move to Rangers in a deal believed to have been an initial fee of £500,000, which would rise on appearances, Reid is back where he started his career. The Carlisle-born defender, who is under contract at Oakwell until the end of next season, moving back to Cumbria for a temporary spell until the current campaign finishes.

Leaving the Blues in June 2000 with 20 starts and two substitute games to his name with Carlisle, after also attracting attention from Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers, Reid never made any first-team appearances at Ibrox although he did pick up England under-19 international honours against Holland while plying his trade north of the border.

Loan spells came and went at Preston North End (one appearance, one as a substitute and one goal), and Northampton Town in his time with Rangers, although sandwiched inbetween those periods came his one and only appearance on the bench for the Ibrox giants as an unused substitute in a 1-0 SPL defeat at Motherwell on Boxing Day 2002.

Northampton, with former Blues boss Martin Wilkinson at the club, had been impressed with what they saw of Reid though and the Cobblers signed him on a permanent basis from Rangers for £100,000 in the summer of 2003. Wilkinson was soon to become the chief scout at Barnsley however and he recommended Reid to Oakwell boss Paul Hart in July 2004.

Reid eventually signing for Barnsley that month for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal after making 60 starts, two substitute appearances and scoring two goals for the Cobblers. An instant hit at Oakwell Reid signed a futher two-year contract extension in the summer of 2007 before falling out of favour with current Tykes boss Simon Davey (himself an ex-Carlisle man) earlier this year, the 26-year old eventually being placed on the transfer list in January.

So Reid comes back to Brunton Park with 121 starts, seven substitute appearances and seven goals behind him at Oakwell, although it seems unlikey that he will dislodge either Peter Murphy or Danny Livesey in the middle of the United back four. He will though provide experienced back-up in the Blues defence should any injuries come in Carlisle's final eight match push to reach the Championship.
