Club captain Peter Murphy has today reversed his decision to leave Brunton Park after penning a new two-year deal to stay with the Cumbrians. The 26-year old Irishman who joined United way back in 2001 has already made 263 starts, plus 13 as a substitute in Carlisle colours, although he still stands a long way off the club league appearances record which is held at 466 by goalkeeper Allan Ross.

Murphy though, from his outfield position, has weighed in with 16 goals, the most memorable being the only goal of the game in the Nationwide Conference play-off final victory over Stevenage Borough. The Dubliner's decision to stay in Cumbria comes after he refused improved contract offers at the end of last season as he hoped for a move to a Championship club.

No good offers have seemingly been forthcoming though, the obvious one being the rumour that wouldn't go away that linked together Murphy, Brendan McGill and SPL newcomers Gretna. Irish-international Murphy returned to training this week with United though and he and the Carlisle hierachy have now thrashed out a new deal for the popular centre-half to remain with the club.

It's certainly one headache sorted for Blues boss Neil McDonald as well as he now perhaps only needs to find one more new central defender before the start of the new season. Left-back was also one position where United lacked some cover but the re-signing of Murphy ends that problem with the 26-year old having featured in that position numerous times for Carlisle. The hunt goes on now for further reinforcements after today's somewhat surprising news.
