After nicking past Morecambe at Christie Park on penalties last year in the opening stage of the competition, Carlisle this season can take the round off as they have been given a bye through to round two of the northern section. United once that stage comes around in early October scheduled to face one of Accrington, Bury, Crewe, Macclesfield, Morecambe, Oldham, Port Vale, Rochdale, Stockport, Shrewsbury or Tranmere in the North West section of the draw.

Of those eleven teams Bury, Crewe and Stockport are the definite round two contenders as they have joined Carlisle in receiving an opening stage bye, after not getting one last season. As for the other eight sides, as well as those in the other regional sections, their first round fixtures will be decided on the morning of Saturday 14th August when the draw is made live on Soccer AM, with those games then scheduled to take place in the week commencing 30th August.
