The 34-year old ex-Tranmere centre-half has looked like his legs are finally on the wane at various stages this season, although his form has improved as the season has gone on. However, Carlisle boss Paul Simpson has re-signed him as much for his dressing-room influence and leadership qualities, as his playing skills on the pitch.

Simpson, who has put versatile defender Simon Grand on an unofficial transfer list, is still on the lookout for a new centre-half this summer though as the Blues make the step up to League One, and better quality strikers to defend against. Gray made over 50 appearances for United in their League Two title winning campaign though so there is no doubt that he would push any new signing hard for a place in the middle of the Carlisle back-line.

Sheffield-born Gray linked up with the Cumbrians way back in November 2003 and has made 112 appearances for the club in total, scoring nine goals in the process. He started his career at Mansfield and has also served time with Stockport and Tranmere, although Huddersfield Town is where he has spent the majority of his playing career, starring for the West Yorkshire club for eight years overall. This could well be the last season of his career though, and after helping United to two successive promotions no-one could deny him this latest contract award.
