Blues defender Josh Gowling
Before the season has even started the 25-year old has become a victim of Carlisle's strength in depth in their defensive ranks. Gowling, with a year left on his contract at Brunton Park, now even more surplus to requirements as he sits behind David Raven, Danny Livesey, Richard Keogh, Peter Murphy, Ian Harte, and perhaps even Tom Aldred, in the Cumbrians pecking order.

Josh has only made five starts and one substitute appearance since being signed by former Blues boss John Ward on a two-year Bosman deal in July 2008. Gowling having been on loan at Hereford United last season, where he made 13 starts in a productive three-month spell at Edgar Street.

Current United manager Greg Abbott obviously doesn't see Gowling as part of his future plans and the wording on this loan move from the Carlisle camp is that it can be extended for a further period, should all parties agree. Gills boss Mark Stimson commenting to the official Gillingham website on the signing today of Gowling for a month :

"I've been aware that the kid has been available for the last week and now he's agreed to join us for a month. He'll add a bit of pace to the back line, he's an athlete with good potential and at 25 he's a good age too. He wants to play and hopefully that's what he'll come in and do.

" It's a good addition to the squad at this time of pre-season, we can work with him for two weeks and it's up to him to compete for the centre-half place. He is a right sided centre-half so that gives us both him and Garry Richards that can play up alongside Kingy (Simon King).

" He'll be involved straight away tomorrow night at Bishops Stortford and the best player at the end of it will get the shirt. He's had decent league experience and has genuine pace which always helps in a centre-half. He knows the league and hopefully we enjoy him, he enjoys being with us and we can extend his deal at the end of the month."
