The First Round Proper produces the usual array of shocks
The FA Cup
Perhaps the biggest of those coming at the Prostar Stadium where Blue Square South outfit Staines Town defeated Shrewsbury Town 1-0, Ali Chabaan getting the only goal of the game in the 21st minute. Another side from that division defeating League Two opposition on the road were Bath City who won 2-0 at Grimsby Town, Chris Holland and Darren Edwards getting the goals that provided the Blundell Park cup shock.
Another three matches saw Blue Square Premier sides taste victory over Football League teams and the first of those games saw Kettering Town win 1-0 at Hartlepool United, Moses Ashikodi bagging the glory for the Poppies early on in the tie. York City also progressing to the second round with a 3-2 home win over Crewe Alexandra, Richard Brodie (2) and Richard Pacquette getting the goals for the Minstermen while Joel Grant and Calvin Zola netted for the visitors.
Table-topping Oxford United at home to League One side Yeovil Town always looked like being the favourite tie for a cup shock, and that proved to be the case at the Kassam Stadium as Jack Midson's 55th minute goal put the U's through. This afternoon sees three more non-league clubs trying their FA Cup luck too as Oxford City, Wealdstone and finally Northwich Victoria look to make it into the second round proper and pick up £18,000 in prize money along the way.
With the second round draw coming up at around 3.35pm on ITV1 after the conclusion of the televised Northwich Victoria v Charlton Athletic tie, it means there will be at least ten "either/ors" in the draw. Three matches, including Millwall v AFC Wimbledon on Monday evening having yet to be concluded by that time while seven games ended in draws yesterday. One of those matches coming at Brunton Park where Carlisle and Morecambe now go to a replay, both sides waiting for the number SIXTEEN ball to come out in the non-regionalised draw.
