Donny At Home For Blues On Opening Day

Starting the season against Rovers takes us back to the last game of the 2003-04 season when an already relegated United made the trip to South Yorkshire and the Earth Stadium. It was party time at one end of the pitch, but not at the other, as Doncaster won 1-0 and celebrated having the League Two title in the bag and a second successive promotion, following Conference play-off final success the season before.

The view for the Doncaster fans at Brunton Park on Saturday 5th August

A club winning promotion two years on the trot from the Conference and League Two, while claiming the fourth tier title in the process, certainly strikes a chord with United fans who are desperate to stay in League One after being relegated straight back down again the last two times they have stepped up a division.

It won't be an easy task though, especially after the summer departure of Cumbrians manager Paul Simpson, and there are some tough teams to play in there, and the fixture computer hasn't exactly been kind to the Cumbrians either. A bumper derby day crowd looms only for Blackpool as they play host to United on Boxing Day, while just four days later the Blue Army has to make a ridiculous trip all the way down to Brighton over the festive period, and then come back to Brunton Park to face Bradford City at Brunton Park on New Years Day just 48 hours on.

The season ends with a trip to Glanford Park and Scunthorpe United on Saturday the 5th of May, a ground which has seen some cracking games between the Blues and the Iron over the years. When you look at the names of some the teams in the fixture list you can see certainly see the step up in class the Carlisle players need to make, for the second season in a row, but with a new manager installed, and hopefully a few new signings, the Cumbrians will be hopeful of, at least, League One survival.
