The Carling Cup
Tuesday morning at 9.30am sees the first thing to look forward to from a fixture perspective this season as the draw is made for the first round of the Carling Cup. Carlisle one of 34 clubs in the Northern section as Newcastle United and Middlesbrough have received byes into the second round as the highest placed clubs in last season's league tables, the Blues unseeded as they finished below 13th in League One in the 2008-09 campaign.

As much as it is the Northern section Carlisle could still face a 426 mile round trip if they were to get drawn away to Coventry City for a match-up with former goalkeeper Keiren Westwood. Five of the 17 seeded clubs in the "North" being long distance Midlands clubs if United were to end up on the road in the opening stage of the competition.

After round one, which takes place in the opening week of the season, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough will enter the second round draw along with Premier League clubs Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Hull City, Manchester City, Portsmouth, Stoke City, Sunderland, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Wigan Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The seven clubs involved in Europe this season, those being Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Fulham, Liverpool and Manchester United being exempt until the third stage of the competition. Carlisle though will be overjoyed just to get to that round considering the last time they did just so was way back in their 1975-76 campaign when they eventually lost 2-0 at Everton in that third round.
