On the bench again
Right-winger McGill joined the Scottish Division Two champions on a free transfer this morning after talks between himself and Blues boss Paul Simpson. The Irishman having seen his chances of regular first-team football fade with Carlisle planning for League One football next season after two successive promotion campaigns.

McGill joined the Cumbrians way back on the 8th of September 2001, initially on a loan period from then Premiership big-hitters Sunderland until the end of that season, the tricky winger having made only one substitute League Cup appearance in his four years with the Wearsiders. Brendan made a good impact in that loan period with his pacey style and was snapped up by United boss Roddy Collins on a free transfer in the summer of 2002.

The Dubliner went on to make 194 appearances for the Blues in his time at Brunton Park, scoring a healthy 22 goals in the process. His final appearance in Carlisle colours came as a substitute in the 2-0 win at Rochdale in the penultimate match of the season, McGill then being informed at the end of the season that he was to be placed on an unofficial transfer list along with Simon Grand and Glenn Murray. The winger being, along with those two players, an integral part of United's Pontin's Holiday League success, McGill often finding himself playing in an unaccustomed central midfield role for the reserves.

Brendan had been reduced to little more than bench-warming in the League two title-winning campaign, he as found it near-impossible to break his way into a hugely in-form side. So, after a few days of talks with the Raydale Park outfit McGill has inked a three year contract with Gretna, a deal that has a 20% sell on clause inserted into it. The Irishman was always a player who put in every effort for the cause and CUFC Online wishes him all the best at his new club.
