Ashington-born Atkin links up with the Cumbrians on a contract until the end of the season after playing twice recently on trial for Carlisle in behind closed doors friendly matches, the defender seemingly being given a chance to find a new club by Toon boss Glenn Roeder with his current deal at St James' Park due to run out at the end of the current campaign.

The 20-year old has been a mainstay in Newcastle's reserve side, featuring in an early-season friendly against Workington Reds at Borough Park, over the last two seasons but, even with a lengthy injury list at the club recently, he has been unable to even find a place on the bench, with 19-year old Carlisle-born centre-half Paul Huntington well above him in the Toon pecking order. Atkin has apparently played in various positions for the Black and Whites second-string including centre-back, wing-back, winger and centre-forward but it will more than likely be in the centre of defence where Liam will pushing for a place at Brunton Park.
