Blues Bag Bantams In Carling Cup Draw

The big prize
With all 72 Football League clubs in the hat, and the draw seeded between the top 36 and bottom 36 of those teams, the Cumbrians had faced the prospect of receiving a hard tie. As it was though we saw the other side of the coin as a home game against the Bantams was, statistically speaking, the second easiest draw United could have had out of their 36 options, City having finished 11th in League One last season.

Carlisle have only faced the West Yorkshire outfit once before in the League Cup, and that way back in our only ever top flight campaign in 1974-75. Les O'Neill scored the only goal then as the Blues won 1-0 away from home in a second round tie, eventually dropping out at the next hurdle as they slipped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat on the road at the hands of Colchester United.

United have faced City 21 times at home in total over the years, showing an overall record of won nine, drawn five and lost seven in those matches, the Blues both scoring and conceding 36 goals in the process. The last time the two teams met at Brunton Park was the last time the Cumbrians were competing at League One level in 1995-96. The sides fighting out a 2-2 draw in late October, with Carlisle's goals coming from Darren Edmondson and David Reeves in front of a Brunton Park crowd of 6,274.
