Abbott links up with the Blues today after Carlisle agreed a compensation package with Leeds United, where Abbott was previously the under-18 coach. The one-time Bradford City midfielder taking over from Billy Barr who left Brunton Park recently to follow ex-Cumbrians boss Paul Simpson down the M6 to Preston North End.

The 42-year old started his career at Coventry, the city of his birth, before moving north to Bradford City in 1982, where he went on to make 318 appearances. In the summer of 1991 he moved on to Halifax Town but was quickly out on another tour of the West Yorkshire area when he joined non-league Guiseley after just one season at the Shay Stadium.

Hull City quickly saw that Abbott still had something to offer the Football League though and he moved to the Humber in December 1992 until retiring from the playing side of the game in May 1996. Greg then went on to be assistant manager at Guiseley in the 1997-98 season under the stewardship of ex-Scarborough boss Steve Richards at Nethermoor. Then, after Richards got the boot from the Leeds Road outfit in February 1998, Abbott was also released from his contract, Greg moving on to nearby Thackley at the start of the following season where he was joint boss with former Guiseley reserve team manager Brendan Hudson.

Abbott then joined up with Leeds United six years ago, originally as coach of the club's under-14 side. He moved on to take over as head of recruitment, but reverted back to coaching two years ago when he took on the role of under-18 coach, his side finishing runners-up in the league twice in successive seasons under Greg's tenure.

Abbott said about his time at the Elland Road outfit : " I've loved every minute of my time at Leeds, but I want to test myself at senior level. I've enjoyed working with the players at the club and I can't stress how supportive the senior players have been towards working with the younger players. I'd like to thank them for that and wish Leeds all the best. "
