Mariners assistant manager Stuart Watkiss spoke to the Grimsby Telegraph about his side's 1-0 FA Cup first round replay win over Carlisle at Blundell Park last night, Watkiss suggesting that Town are finding it easier playing League One teams as they are allowed more time on the ball :

"Obviously very pleased. We created more chances than Carlisle. We had to rely on Gary Montgomery to pull one or two saves out towards the end, as you would expect in a cup tie against a higher division team. But over the 90 minutes I thought that we were the better team.

"We played some decent stuff and we're obviously very pleased that we go away to Huddersfield in the next round. Just after the goal the gaffer (Alan Buckley) said it was the best bit of forward play he has seen since he came to the club. It was a super goal. It was a little step-over, a back-heel and then a great finish with the outside of the foot.

"We had three or four chances in the first 15 minutes. I think we hit the woodwork twice and the keeper has made a decent save, and then we have had a couple of really good situations after the goal to kill it off. But when Gary Montgomery was called upon at the other end he did what he was there to do so he can be pleased with his night's work, as can everybody.

"I'm sure that the Grimsby fans go away and think why can't you replicate that in the league? It's a million-dollar question. We've had three really good results out of the last four games but they're probably over-shadowed because we were so poor and so inept on Saturday (against Morecambe)."

"When you play teams out of a higher division it's more of a football match, where it comes down to passing and getting into pockets of space. When you play week in week out at League Two level you do come across more physical teams.

"That wasn't the case on Saturday to be fair - Morecambe came and passed us off the park - but we seem to have struggled a little bit against the more physical, more direct teams, and that's something we have to learn to overcome. We have to know when we can pass it and play a little bit but sometimes you have to be direct.

"We all want to play football, we all want to get it into the strikers' feet, but there are times when you just have to slide things down the side and, if you like, play territory. That's something we have to work on. We did it better tonight but it's one game and we've still got an awful lot of work to do to make us better.

"We've got to look forward to Barnet away. We're still 22nd in the league, we're very aware of that, we know that's got to be put right, but hopefully everybody can take confidence from three out of the last four games and we can go down to Barnet and pick up the three points that the club so badly needs."

Meanwhile Town goalscorer Gary Jones commented :

"The win is great and the goal is great but getting that clean sheet is exceptional for us. It's our 22nd game of the season and it's our first clean sheet. If you can get clean sheets you're always in the game and we can then go on to create goals like we have tonight.I don't think I've scored many better than that one to be honest. The build-up was good and the finish matched it so all round it was really pleasing.

"I played a lot with Northy (Danny North) last season and he was scoring goals and I was scoring goals. We haven't really had the chance to play this season for whatever reason but when I do play with him I know his strengths. I know he is strong and fast and that he will get on the end of things and so I think we work well together."
