United player-manager Paul Simpson spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Tuesday evening as he gave his thoughts on the hard-fought 1-0 win over the Red Imps at Brunton Park. It was a performance from the Blues where they had really had to grind out the win, but it takes Carlisle six points clear at the top of the table with the Football League Trophy Final to look forward to on Sunday as well :

" I'm delighted as we knew it was going to be a tough game tonight. I don't think there is a more difficult side to play against in the whole league than Lincoln. We knew it was a case of just rolling our sleeves up, dealing with the big lads that they have got and the aerial threat that they have got, and then hoping that we could play ourselves. On a very difficult surface to play I think we have played some good football, we've created some good opportunities and I would imagine as a supporter it was an excellent game to watch.

" It was a hell of a finish for the goal, there were a few chances, more for us than for Lincoln, I thought we marshalled them very, very well. I thought Chris Billy in midfield was absolutely superb, the defence defended very well and I thought the goal was a reward for the other chances we created. We knew it was going to be a game of very few chances and we just had to be clinical when we did actually get the good one.

" I've said for weeks now that I didn't even want to talk about the Millennium (Stadium). I've had to speak about it though, we've had to do different bits and pieces and organisation but now we can really look forward to it. It's going to be a great day out, a fantastic opportunity for the players and supporters to go and enjoy being in a final, enjoy a major stadium and everything that goes with it. We know as well that whatever happens on Saturday we are still going to be top of the league.

" It's a great season to be involved in, so far, and I will keep saying so far because there is still a long way to go, we don't want to let it slip away. I've got to be honest that I would have taken a point out of tonight's game because it was a real tough match. I knew what problems that they would cause, I knew how good they had been against Grimsby on Saturday and we had to be right tonight. I think we've shown real character, real strength, spirit, everything that you can talk about, and we've also played a bit of football.

" The attendance was tremendous. On a night like tonight when it's cold and miserable, and everybody has had to fork out a hell of a lot of money for a big trip to Cardiff this weekend, it shows the depth of support we've got. Hopefully we can keep getting results, keep them coming in and who knows, for this Grimsby game coming up after Cardiff maybe we can get an even better one.

" Grimsby is going to be another massive game. It's difficult to guess how many points and how many more wins we will need but I think if we can get three (points) against Grimsby then that will really set us on our way. We've avoided talking about the LDV Final, we've avoided all the talk that people want to make about that, now we can enjoy it this week and then we'll worry about Grimsby after that.

" Tonight Karl Hawley has told me in the warm-up that he didn't think he was right to carry on. His groin was sore and we nearly pulled him off, we decided just to go with him and as he got warmed up you would never even have guessed that he was struggling, he's put in a great performance and been a major part of the team winning. "
